Availability & Specials: Right now we still have space available in June, July and August. We anticipate July to fill up fast, as it is our busiest month. We will be doing some exploratory fishing at our outpost camps on Kepimets River and Kepimets Lake throughout the season. We are looking for guests for the last part of June who would like to try breaking the IGFA fly fishing records for the landlocked salmon (more information in Fishing News section).
Fishing News: The fishing in late June was fantastic. We caught lots of 5 to 8 lb landlocked salmon on 14-16 size dry flies on the current seams and foam lines. What a rush! Later after reading the IGFA Records for fly fishing, I realized we broke every one except for the junior one. We now have all the equipment & certifications we need to register a record sized fish. We need your help in getting your name and our lodge in the record book. My family is helping open up the lodge this year and my 9 yr old son and 7 yr old daughter are planning on breaking the junior records for both male & females. Stay tuned for the results. The brook trout fishing was great early on and then Mother Nature was not very nice. The weather was very hot & dry, without any rain. This caused the water levels to drop and the big fish to retreat to the lake, making them hard to catch. Of course, the pike always cooperate, taking the dry flies and the huge wet flies. The weather is the driving force to our fishery; it controls the water level, hatches, etc. The hatches control the intensity of the fishing, with July being caddis month, rain is key, which in turn makes the dry fly fishing unbelievable!
Lodge News: Our June 09 newsletter stated we were going into camp on June 15th to open it up and get some work done. The trip started on June 13th when a friend of mine, Eric Clark and I drove from Maine to Labrador City. Eric drove the new guest transportation van and I drove my pick up truck, both vehicles full of supplies. We left at 6:00am and drove all the way to Manic Five (a 16 hours drive), spent the night and got up early the next day to complete the trip (another 6 hours) to Labrador City. We arrived around 1:30 pm, loaded up the awaiting Otter and we headed into the lodge. Around 5:00 pm. An hour later we were at the lodge and then unloaded the plane and relaxed. The following day, the rest of our staff joined us to get some work done. We built a new dock, installed new toilets and were going to do the showers when the generator decided it had enough. Well, we can’t very well be without a generator so that required a trip back to States for parts and now the generator has been completely rebuilt. Needless to say, this took up any extra time we had so the showers didn’t get done last season, they are first on our list for this season. So, with a new dock, toilets and generator we were in great shape. Bring on the guests!
So, come on up to try and to break a record, catch what I think is the most beautiful fish on earth (the brook trout), or try to catch a huge lake trout on a fly in the river early in the season. Better yet, come on up, enjoy the peace and quiet, great food, great people, and let the fishing fill in the rest. Please check out our website for more information or contact us at (207) 799-0403.
Remember, take a kid fishing.
Have a great year; hope to see you in Labrador.
