Fly Fishing Labrador Canada: Summer Fishing & Lodge Updates

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Availability & Specials: Right now we still have space available in June, July and August. We anticipate July to fill up fast, as it is our busiest month. We will be doing some exploratory fishing at our outpost camps on Kepimets River and Kepimets Lake throughout the season. We are looking for guests for the last part of June who would like to try breaking the IGFA fly fishing records for the landlocked salmon (more information in Fishing News section).

Fishing News: The fishing in late June was fantastic. We caught lots of 5 to 8 lb landlocked salmon on 14-16 size dry flies on the current seams and foam lines. What a rush! Later after reading the IGFA Records for fly fishing, I realized we broke every one except for the junior one. We now have all the equipment & certifications we need to register a record sized fish. We need your help in getting your name and our lodge in the record book. My family is helping open up the lodge this year and my 9 yr old son and 7 yr old daughter are planning on breaking the junior records for both male & females. Stay tuned for the results. The brook trout fishing was great early on and then Mother Nature was not very nice. The weather was very hot & dry, without any rain. This caused the water levels to drop and the big fish to retreat to the lake, making them hard to catch. Of course, the pike always cooperate, taking the dry flies and the huge wet flies. The weather is the driving force to our fishery; it controls the water level, hatches, etc. The hatches control the intensity of the fishing, with July being caddis month, rain is key, which in turn makes the dry fly fishing unbelievable!

Lodge News: Our June 09 newsletter stated we were going into camp on June 15th to open it up and get some work done. The trip started on June 13th when a friend of mine, Eric Clark and I drove from Maine to Labrador City. Eric drove the new guest transportation van and I drove my pick up truck, both vehicles full of supplies. We left at 6:00am and drove all the way to Manic Five (a 16 hours drive), spent the night and got up early the next day to complete the trip (another 6 hours) to Labrador City. We arrived around 1:30 pm, loaded up the awaiting Otter and we headed into the lodge. Around 5:00 pm. An hour later we were at the lodge and then unloaded the plane and relaxed. The following day, the rest of our staff joined us to get some work done. We built a new dock, installed new toilets and were going to do the showers when the generator decided it had enough. Well, we can’t very well be without a generator so that required a trip back to States for parts and now the generator has been completely rebuilt. Needless to say, this took up any extra time we had so the showers didn’t get done last season, they are first on our list for this season. So, with a new dock, toilets and generator we were in great shape. Bring on the guests!

So, come on up to try and to break a record, catch what I think is the most beautiful fish on earth (the brook trout), or try to catch a huge lake trout on a fly in the river early in the season. Better yet, come on up, enjoy the peace and quiet, great food, great people, and let the fishing fill in the rest.  Please check out our website for more information or contact us at (207) 799-0403.

Remember, take a kid fishing.

Have a great year; hope to see you in Labrador.

The Best Fishing Year Ever! Come Fish In June Or August!

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Availability & Specials: We currently have space available the last full week of June and the month of August. The month of July is full. June fishing is spectacular for lake trout, salmon and brook trout. August provides world class fly fishing for brook trout and pike and dry-fly fishing is still good, depending on the hatches.

So, get a few friends together, come on up to Labrador and enjoy some world class fly fishing. Be sure to visit our full website  for lots of great fishing pictures, lodge pictures, video and more.  Contact us today, as internet specials may apply, and we can help you make your dream fly fishing trip come true!

Lodge & Fishing News: It is the first of June and the ice is just getting ready to go out within the next week or two. We are going in to open up The River Keep Lodge on June 15th. We will be getting ready for another great fishing season and installing new showers and toilets in the guest camps, building a new dock (the old one has served its purpose and we thank it for a job well done) and building a new stairway to the lodge.

We anticipate great fishing in 2009, hopefully the best ever! Prior to our acquiring the lodge, the bookings were very low. When we took over ownership of the lodge three years ago, we implemented a strict catch & release policy! This has added nearly a full pound to the average weight of our fish! We expect this year to show the full impact of our Catch & Release program and some big, healthy brook trout. Our guests list is growing steadily every year so this program is sure to provide excellent fishing for many years and generations to come.

In The Press: Don’t take our word for it, take a look at a recent article in American Angler and read what others have to say about The River Keep Lodge experience - “catching a six-pound brookie on a mouse pattern will convert even the harshest skeptic.”  Be sure to check out another great article in The Orvis News about fly fishing at The Riverkeep Lodge.
